The power to save untold thousands of lives from experiencing disease and premature death from tobacco use is within reach.

The Senate is expected to vote this week on a bill to provide oversight on the tobacco industry. Currently, Big Tobacco packages and promotes its products with virtually no meaningful checks. This results in some 400,000 tobacco-related deaths each year. And much of the industry’s $13 billion in annual marketing is directed at children to allure new consumers to replace dying ones. House approves gay hate crimes bill

The U.S. House of Representatives has easily approved hate crimes protections for homosexuals and transgendered individuals that opponents believe could seriously hinder religious freedom.

The House voted 249-175 for the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which would add “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” to the current categories — such as race, religion and national origin — protected from hate crimes. “Sexual orientation” includes homosexuality, while “gender identity,” or transgendered status, takes in transsexuals and cross-dressers.

Clinton: U.S. backs export of abortion

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton acknowledged at a congressional hearing the Obama administration regards abortion as “reproductive health” care and believes women throughout the world have a right to the procedure.

Clinton also defended her admiration for the late eugenicist Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood.

Rick Warren hosts presidential forum Sat. night

Pastor Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback church in California, will be interviewing McCain and Obama tomorrow night (8/16). 

Warren says “[t]he leader who says, ‘I’m going to take my worldview and just put it on the shelf when I make decisions,’ is either an idiot or they’re lying, because you can’t do it . . . [a]ll of your decisions are based on what you value, what you believe in life. And so I think it’s important to find out what these guys really believe.”

A Baptist layman tired of the bingo establishment operating the same hours his church was having services, especially since they were so close to one another. The Christian Action Commission (CAC) suggested he contact his state representative about the situation. He did. His representative filed a bill stipulating the hours bingo could operate if within a certain distance to a church. The bill passed both houses and the governor signed it into law. Many TV shows have been emphasizing the importance of charity, and it appears most Mississippi legislators have taken this lead as well – but not in the true sense of charity. To be charitable means to give to someone in need, ill or helpless, but most Mississippi legislators have chosen to redefine charity to apply to lucrative casino businesses. 

In 2007 casinos had revenue in excess of $2.8 billion and for January and February 2008 alone nearly $500 million, but despite these numbers most legislators have chosen to deem the casino industry in need of charity.
