Harry Reid’s Christmas Gift of Health Care Reform
Monday, January 04, 2010
By Doug Carlson - Dec 22, 2009
With Christmas just days away, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has not kept quiet about his gift to the American people—sweeping health care reform. Yet tucked inside this package, many of its contents tightly concealed until last Saturday in a 383-page amendment, are unwelcome offerings like $518 billion in new taxes, nearly a half-trillion-dollar cut to Medicare, and most disturbingly, mandates for federal funding of abortion, all wrapped in strong government control that could lead to rationing of care. Thanks but no thanks, millions of Americans are saying.
The gift-giving has already begun. Late Sunday night—1:08 a.m.…

A Failure in Courage
Richard Land
Many people will remember John F. Kennedy’s wonderful little book Profiles in Courage, which tells the stories of men who stood against incredible political pressure for conscience sake. There’s a reason it‘s such a small book. Such profiles in courage are rare. In the past few days, we have seen just how rare in the United States Senate.
President Obama promised health care deliberations on C-SPAN, open for all to see. Instead, we’ve been treated to crass political deals cut in the middle of the night behind closed doors. Sen. Mary Landrieu’s (D-La.) $300 million deal, now forever…

Is There A Doctor In The House?
Tuesday, August 18, 2009
By Jimmy Porter
H. R. 3200, a massive health care reform bill, is being debated in Congress and in all other media outlets. Most everyone agrees that health care reform is needed because of the numbers uninsured along with spiraling costs. But the current proposal raises as many questions and fears as it provides answers and solutions. What does H.R. 3200 say about availability of quality health care, doctor-patient relationships, abortion, end of life issues, single payer plan, and costs in additional taxes?
The Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Commission has published an analysis of the most distressing aspects of the…

‘Cap-and-Tax’ Fiasco
Wednesday, July 01, 2009
by Doug Carlson
Basic economic principles teach that achieving sound economic policy requires careful consideration of two expected outcomes: costs and benefits. A majority in Congress has just opted to disregard both.
In a narrow 219-212 vote, the House of Representatives has approved what many call the largest tax increase in American history—all in what many experts view as a futile attempt to control the world’s thermostat. The Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade bill, which restricts industries to specified amounts of greenhouse gases and other carbon emissions they can discharge, garnered support from 211 Democrats and eight Republicans. The damage was done Friday night,…

Federal Legislative Agenda for 2009
Thursday, January 08, 2009
By Richard Land and Barrett Duke - Jan 7, 2009
The election of Barack Obama as the nation’s 44th president along with significant liberal gains in the House and Senate have created substantial challenges for many of the issues of concern to Southern Baptists and other social conservatives in the upcoming 111th Congress.
Sanctity of Human Life
Our greatest concern is the likelihood that many pro-life advances achieved under President Bush’s administration will be rolled back. President-elect Obama’s pledge to sign the Freedom of Choice Act would do that very thing. This pernicious bill would invalidate all limits on abortion. Even the gruesome practice of partial-birth abortion would be…

Dear President-elect Obama,

By Richard Land
Nov 5, 2008
First, congratulations on your successful campaign to become the 44th President of our beloved United States of America. This was a historic election in terms of the massive increase in voter participation as a percentage of the electorate.
I hope you know that there are tens of millions of Americans who did not vote for you who are still very, very pleased that an African-American has been elected President of the United States.
The fact that this could happen in a country with as tragic a racial past as America’s says…

Obama: Born-Alive Infant Protection Act
Friday, October 10, 2008
After Rick Warren’s Saddleback Presidential Forum, Barack Obama was interview by a reporter where Obama accused the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) of lying about a claim that he did not support legislation that would give babies who survive an abortion the right-to-life. So who’s telling the truth, Obama or the NRLC?
The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission’s Richard Land sorts it out on his radio program, Richard Land Live! In the program, Land reports that even though “Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has claimed since 2004 that he…

Rob Chambers
Biloxi mayor gives gambling a positive spin in recent article, Presidential politics likely to impact gambling landscape:
A.J. Holloway, the four-term mayor of the city of Biloxi, said he doesn’t know the politics of Alabama, but Mississippi had to do something. Tasting the Forbidden Fruit
Thursday, May 15, 2008
Bob Terry - May 14, 2008
God promised it would happen. “You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die,” God cautioned Adam in Genesis 2:17. But Adam and Eve did not believe the warning. They concluded they knew more than God did and ate the forbidden fruit.
You know what happened next. Their innocence died and they hid behind fig leaves. Their relationship to each other died, and Adam blamed Eve for his problems, while Eve blamed the serpent. Their relationship to God died, and they hid from…
