Loose Lips Really Will Sink This Ship

By William Perkins

By now there’s virtually no one in America who hasn’t heard about the tsunami that swept through south Asia on the day after Christmas in 2004. The bone-chilling images of terrified people trying in vain to outrun the massive wall of water are stomach-churning.

The United States was one of the first countries to respond to the humanitarian crisis and is providing an astronomical percentage of the manpower and treasure assisting the survivors.

Southern Baptists are there. They won’t be featured in the headlines or spotlighted on the nightly television news, but they are there. In areas where they had to keep their heads down even before the tsunami disaster, they are hard at work to coordinate the Southern Baptist response.
Teams of trained Southern Baptist disaster relief workers are gearing up for the long-term recovery effort, Mississippi Baptists included. They will be working …

What the World Needs in 2005

When the Berlin Wall came down in November 1989, the world rejoiced. The vast concrete and barbed wire scar running for miles across the German countryside, so vividly symbolic of the great divide between rival ideologies, was no more. The old Soviet Union quickly crumbled and millions of people breathed free for the first time.

Liberty had triumphed at last and a Pax Americana would soon engulf the world, we were told. Many historians even referred to the coming era as “the end of history.” They were wrong.

Even though communism, the great enemy of our way of life, and its harsh dictatorships has faded away in many parts of the world, new threats have arisen in its place to test our mettle. Thus it has always been, and thus it will be. History has not ended, as we euphorically believed only a few short years …

War and Peace

By Jimmy Porter

“You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still yet to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom” (Matt. 24:6-7, NIV).

The newspaper for several days (mid January) has contained articles about the possibility of war – not only with Iraq but also with North Korea. Every leading journal is filled with pros and cons of war. Is it right or is it wrong? Should we or should we not? Are we to be the peacekeeper of the world? Do we have a right to intervene?

We have never known a day when there was not war in some part of the world. Even as we search the Bible we read of numerous conflicts. Over the years Christians have struggled to balance the “God of …

Seeing is Believing: A Device That Determines if You Have a Heart

By Lee Yancey

I recently saw a bumper sticker that read, “If it’s not a baby, you’re not pregnant!” Why is it that pro-choice proponents would have everyone to believe that a baby in the womb is not a baby? Recent technology advances are now making it more clear than ever before that “a person’s a person no matter how small.”(1) New four-dimensional ultrasound machines are being used to give expectant parents clear video footage before their little one is born. Like old ultrasound machines, the 4-D units produce images by bouncing waves off tissue. The test, often used to determine the baby’s gender, offers no risk to the mother or the baby. “The most surprising benefit of the new machine is the instant bond it builds between the mother and the unborn child.”(2) Expectant parents have been getting excited about ultrasounds for years. Many times, however, those fuzzy black and white images …

Family Matters!

The minister said to a young couple on their wedding day, “Man fell but marriage did not. Whatever God intended marriage to be then he intends for marriage to be now.” Does it not appear that the home and marriage have drifted far from God’s original intent? The Bible says, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24 NIV). “The family is an institution that God crafted. Scripture says very plainly that it starts with a husband and a wife and includes their children. The family is the essential center of culture and society; it’s where culture and society have their origins. The core of a solid family is marriage founded in the rock that is Jesus Christ.” (Richard Land, Faith & Family)

Dr Fred Lowery, in Covenant Marriage, gives us …

Pornography – The Sin of Choice

By Jimmy Porter

Monday, March 18, 2002, federal authorities investigating an Internet-based child pornography ring arrested 40 people in 20 states, including two Catholic priests, youth baseball coaches, a school bus driver, a police officer and a teacher’s aide. FBI has dubbed this effort “Operation Candyman.” This Internet child pornography ring has over 7,000 members worldwide with about 1,400 in the USA. More arrests are expected. www.USAToday.com.

Here are samples of the articles found in the Clarion Ledger daily newspaper over the past several months as they relate to pornography, especially child pornography:
