CHRISTIAN ACTION COMMISSION
RECOMMENDATION FOR A LOCAL OPTION
ON REFERENDUMS

  1. Organize when confirmed that petitions are being circulated.
  2. Decide on a name for your organization that is clear and concise.
  3. Know the details of the Mississippi statutes regarding an election.
  4. Allow all races, religions, and ages in opposing legalization of sales of alcoholic beverages to be involved.
  5. Suggested organization:
    Officers
  • Chairperson – leads in developing a strategy and is also the spokesperson for the
    organization.
  • Vice-chairperson – assists the chairperson in implementing the strategy.
  • Secretary – records the minutes of all meetings, helps gather information
    helpful to other committees, and preserves all documents and
    materials used.
  • Treasurer – responsible for depositing funds, pays bills, keeps records and
    monitors the spending of the organization.


  • B. Committees
    1. Prayer Committee – develops prayer teams in every congregation that
    participates with effort.  Keeps teams informed as to progress and efforts
    of the group.
    2. Publicity Committee – responsible for making the public aware of the election and the reasons for voting NO.
    3. Telephone Committee – task is to call all residents to encourage them to vote
    and to vote NO.
    4. Transportation Committee – if election does become a reality, provide transportation to and from voting precincts for those who would not otherwise be able to exercise their right to vote.
    5. Finance Committee – secures the monies necessary to implement the strategy
    of the group.
    6. Youth Committee – utilizes the youth to hand out materials and make contacts with voters a couple of Saturdays before the election.

    VI. The chairperson of each committee and the duly elected officers should serve as an
    executive committee to transact any business necessary during the campaign.
